DST and Y2k And more alphabit soup

So the big DST crisis has come and gone... no big computer crashes again... The Armageddon predictions are starting to get old... I was really hoping for some fun this time. All in all its mostly good that nothing big went down, but with all the hype I was hoping for something good to watch on TV.

So anyways I think a recap is still needed though... Since some crazy people want to try to save money by making it light longer we moved DST up by 3 weeks. It must feel good to be in a place of power where you can say, o yeah, I want the time to move like this then and there here ect. So this move is suppost to save billions of dollars in heating ect. I think they are going to find that it didn't matter. The other thing that is going to happen is about 2 years from now they are going to go into DST for the last time, and we are just going to be there forever... great idea right...

Its too bad that computers cant track the start of DST dynamically... and as bloated as OS's are today, thats not something that I would have thought to be a problem... but it is. It gets better though, the patch that was released only works if the computer watches the rollover from 1:59 to 3:00 am on DST day. How dumb are we? Really?

So yeah, seven years after Y2k and we still haven't learned that shortcuts just create headaches...

Big Video Cards, and Bigger Egos

Out of curiosity, WHY THE HELL DO PROFS MAKE US DO TWICE THE WORK OVER SPRING BREAK?????? did they forget that break means not work? These guys mostly have Phd's so they have been though it, they know nobody wants to do work over the break. Ehh... this ranting is being brought on out of disgust for my profs dropping a double work load on us because the university closed for a day do to weather. In general I wouldn't mind the work, but, to double it, and for it to be nothing but busy work?! Well its busy work for us, for him its his next free research study... and I'm not getting compensated for that.

Ok, so thats the Ego part of my rant for the day.... I hate Profs that think that students dont have lives outside of their class. Now on to the tech rant...

Video cards... we all have them... we all have to have them... why the hell do they have to cost 600 bucks and take 600 watt power supplies? The technology is out there to make a processor in the ghz... these cards could run whole computers from 4 years ago, and these new ones come with a gig of on board video ram, why do we need this much stuff???? Consoles don't seem to need all this crap, and if thats the case, why do I? I love PC gaming, the flexibility of it, but why the hell do I need 2 600 dollar video cards to play at the cutting edge, o and that brings us to the offloaded Physics card.... o yeah, thats great, make it so that 4 games will use it before it flubs, but you'll still need it and more cooling and more wattage... This crap is getting insane, I speced out a new gaming rig, from scratch, with 2 monitors, being that thats all the rage these days... 11 grand.... 11 grand for the top of the line system. That never used to be a thought 2 or 3 years ago. The gaming world needs to come to a head, consoles are wireless... and use nice big HD screens now... make me a keyboard mouse for that and i'm sold... hell they have HD's.... I'll live in that world.
